For William Preston, the Food Pharmacy at Nashville General Hospital has been more than a source of food—it has been a lifeline.
William, who lives in Portland, Tennessee, was introduced to the Food Pharmacy through his primary care provider at Nashville General. Managing diabetes, high blood pressure, and hypertension, he found it increasingly difficult to access nutritious food that aligned with his medical needs. When he first visited the Food Pharmacy, he was shocked by the amount of food he received.
"I was kind of shocked when I went out with my hands full of food. I said, ‘This is really helping me and my brother out just right.’ It’s been helping out a whole lot at the house."
For the past four years, William has relied on the Food Pharmacy to help him maintain a healthy diet. The fresh produce and nutritious meals have had a noticeable impact on his health and well-being.
"It really helped with my health. I’m eating more. Eating good food. And everything. And I enjoy what I eat."
Not only has the program helped William stabilize his blood sugar and improve his overall health, but it has also connected him with a community of caring staff who support him.
"I enjoy the staff down here. I get a lot of fun seeing different staff members working."
William knows firsthand the importance of programs like the Food Pharmacy and the generosity of donors who make it possible. He encourages others to support the mission, ensuring more people in need have access to healthy food.
"I support it 100%. There are people out there who need a food bag from the nearest food bank to help them along the way. Pass it on to them."
Thanks to the Food Pharmacy, William is eating healthier, feeling better, and thriving. His story is a powerful reminder that food is medicine, and through the generosity of donors, lives are being changed every day.
